No, because he can't break the record when his career is done. He can only do that during his playing days. ;D

Kobe is about halfway towards Kareem's total (38K points to 19K points), and he already has 11 years in the league.

That would mean he would have to play another 11 years, all while maintaining his current point production.

He's already starting to slow down. I just can't see any possible way that can happen.

    2 Karl Malone* 36928
    3 Michael Jordan* 32292
    4 Wilt Chamberlain* 31419
    5 Julius Erving* 30026
    6 Moses Malone* 29580
    7 Dan Issel* 27482
    8 Elvin Hayes* 27313
    9 Hakeem Olajuwon* 26946
    10 Oscar Robertson* 26710
    11 Dominique Wilkins* 26668
    12 George Gervin* 26595
    13 John Havlicek* 26395
    14 Alex English* 25613
    15 Rick Barry* 25279
    Reggie Miller* 25279
    17 Jerry West* 25192

    19 Patrick Ewing* 24815
    20 Shaquille O'Neal 24764

Kobe is at 19,212 or so. I think it's pretty safe to say he'll make top-10, barring injury. How far he'll climb, not sure. Cracking the top-5 is doable, but it won't be easy, either.

Having a scoring average of 31.5 certainly is slowing down, isn't it? He's done. He should retire now to prevent the embarassment of scoring only 30.2 per game next season.

3 surgeries in 3 years, no longer attacking the basket with abandon, and admitting you actually get tired all fit my personal criteria of 'slowing down.' As would 11 years in the league and 30,000 career minutes played.

Kobe is not the physical force he once was.

In the NBA, if you are capable of getting out of bed in the morning, you better be in the playoffs.

He had a career year last year! 35 points per game Rok. 35. And you know he would've averaged the same, if not more, this year if he wasn't so unselfish earlier in the season.

Tell the Kober fans that? How about the Shaq fans.

Taking this team to playoffs, in the west, is a huge accomplishment. Would Ronny Turiaf, Smush Parker, and Luke Walton be starting for any other team in the NBA(including the Grizzlies)?
When Shaq left, everybody dubbed the Lakers as a "rebuilding project". So far in 3 years, Kobe has single handedly kept this team in the playoffs twice. That's MVP stuff right there.
