Kindred's frightening look at the future of sportwriting

  1. Why slam what is essentially an anecdote about Leonsis' kid? I think it's a valid portrait of the next generation of readers/consumers of news. Can it be considered an over-generalization? Sure. But you cannot fight the fact that readers will consume news and information on mobile devices and social media platforms for the time being. News has to be specialized because the preferred medium, which in this case is the Web, is specialized. You don't go to CNN when you need help with your laptop. And you don't go to Apple.com when you want an impartial analysis of the latest iPhone.
Readers use the Web for everything from entertainment to making buying decisions (duh). Kids DO NOT READ NEWSPAPERS. Newspapers are so "last generation"; and they will beat that "last generation" to the grave.
Its the medium, not the content. You have to adjust your delivery of content, but good reporting/analysis always wins, you just have to understand your reader and the myriad ways they consume information.
Why do we continue to have these discussions? Jeez. Let go, you'll feel better. Breathe!

  2. I think you're missing the point of the Leonsis anecdote. It had to do with whether kids will read anything of any length, not the medium.

  3. Did you miss the line about the plethora of gadgets he has and how he trades info on Facebook etc.? Yes, he was talking about the kid not reading anything of length, but it was just as much about the medium.
