Key West Citizen (Sports reporter/copy editor)

Discussion in 'Journalism Jobs' started by philly fanatic, Mar 3, 2007.

  1. From journalismjobs.com:

    Company: Key West Citizen
    Position: Sports Writer
    Location: Key West, Florida
    Job Status: Full-time
    Salary: $35,000 to $40,000
    Website: http://www.keysnews.com

Do you want to spend your days at the beach snorkeling, fishing, diving and sunning? How about your nights playing a major role in putting out the Florida Keys’ only daily sports section? The Key West Citizen is seeking a highly motivated sportswriter/copy editor. The job is two-fold, and it’s a tough but rewarding one. We’re looking for someone who can take control of putting out the sports section a few nights a week. Design. Editing. Headline writing. Putting the section to bed. It’s all you. The other three or four shifts will be spent as a sportswriter covering people and events in the Florida Keys. We take our prep sports seriously here, and so do the locals. The Key West High School baseball team is nationally recognized and the athleticism and speed found in other sports is unmatched throughout the country. The cost of living is high, but the rewards for living in the Florida Keys are higher. At least two years daily newspaper experience is preferred and proficient knowledge of InDesign is a must. Send a cover letter, resume, three to five of your best sports writing clips and three to five of your best page design clips to the address below or e-mail to Sports Editor Ralph Morrow at rmorrow@keysnews.com. We’ll be looking to move fast on this, so send your clips today. Only applicants who send package of clips via e-mail or regular mail will be seriously considered for the position. No phone calls, please. Ralph Morrow, Sports Editor, The Key West Citizen 3420 Northside Dr. Key West, FL 33040

  2. How many full-timers are on staff? (It seems like three from the Web site -- SE, ASE and reporter)
Also, did a writer, copy editor or writer/copy editor leave?
Finally, does anybody know what it would be like to live off of $35,000 in Key West with the high living expenses?

  3. Where did you get $35,000 figure from? Can't imagine that paper would pay it, especially for someone two years out of school.

  4. It says $35,000 to $40,000 in the ad. Do you think it's a mistake?

    Salary: $35,000 to $40,000

  5. Oh, wow. There it is. Didn't read that part. I would imagine you could do OK down there if you're single and drink beer at home occassionally.

Write, it's on the JJobs ad. And there's a good reason why that's the salary, because ...

I'd imagine $35k in Key West is Ramen-level money, but that's just a hunch.

Had a friend who started here out of school. Worked his two years, lived it up and moved on to a very good smaller paper. Know next to nothing about the KWC, but hey, it's Key West. If you're young and single, go for it.

Visiting Key West: cool. Living there: different story.

Now, I'm no Raymond Babbitt in mathematical ability, but doesn't that ad, off the top, tell you that you are working six to seven days a week?

Didn't this paper have an ad on here six months to a year ago where the salary listed was $25,000?

This was Rick Telander's first job, I think.

    agreed.

that said, for a single 24-year old two years out of school with one small daily under his belt, willing to live in a small studio apartment 20 minutes outside of town and subsist on ramen, beer and fast food, it might be fun for a couple of years.

imagine the guilt-free hook ups you could have with the vacationing hotties.
