So over 150 games, that's .05 runs per game, which he more than makes up for with his bat.

Cabrera's defense at 3B has been somewhat below average as opposed to the "catastrophic" expected by many. (OTOH Fielder at 1B has been as bad or worse than anyone feared.)

He's not helped by the fact that Jhonny Peralta at SS has awful range, too. There ain't many balls going past Cabrera in the hole that Peralta gets to. Cabrera has proven to be OK in handling bunts -- a few teams tried him on it early in the season and he gunned most of them out.

Verlander has been off somewhat from his all-universe form of last season, but he has not been helped by Leyland's hell-bent-for-leather insistence on letting (or forcing) him pitch out of every jam, throw 120 pitches every time out, go for the complete game, etc etc. There have been a couple games Leyland has left him in a couple innings too long and his ERA has gotten dinged up as a result.

Sure, and Austin Jackson plays premium defense and is solid with the stick. So it's not that insane for someone to suggest that he adds more value to Detroit than Cabrera. The MVP is typically an offensive award, so I expect Cabrera to be in the running, but you can't fault a guy for looking at both sides of the ball when assessing value.

Fine, he has a negative -5.3 UZR/150 over 4,261 innings at 3B. Do we really need a measure to say Cabrera isn't a good third baseman? It's pretty obvious.

It's not insane, but Jackson is probably a B-plus level CF while Cabrera is a C-minus level 3B. That doesn't make up for a difference of 17 HRs.

He's slightly below average. That's about it.

Not to mention the fact that it's a hell of a lot easier for the guys hitting in front of Cabrera knowing pitchers are going after them so they don't have to face Miggy with guys on base.
