    Hilarious.

Some dorks on 4chan decide to try to start the rumor that Kanye West is dead. Some people Twitter it. Enough people to get it into the "Trending topics" list on Twitter. This makes it the subject of much discussion, which keeps it at the top of the Trending Topics list. It won't go away.

I'm a gonna let you finish dying, Kanye. But first I want to say that Michael Jackson's celebrity death was the best evah!

I had to look it, too. Apparently, it's a site where people post photos and then comment on them, like a cross between photobucket and a less-clever FARK, I suppose.

4chan is an image board, which is essentially just a message board centered around posting pictures.

4chan in particular is famous on the internet for its "random" category, known as /b/. The posts there are anonymous, and there are almost no rules or moderation. It's a combination of porn, people trying to create new 'memes' (internet jokes that spread all over. This is where those pictures of cats with funny captions originated, for example), and people trying to find other people on the internet to annoy.

4chan users were also responsible for hacking into a Christian dating site's database and using the information to post phony Facebook updates like this one:

The hijinks were covered in this thread.

Good Lord, someone bought a /b/ death rumor? They probably do that 12 times a day mininum on people ranging from Emeril to Brett Favre to Will Smith. It's right up there with "post pictures of your penis" and "post ending in 69 decides how I kill myself" threads.

Someone posts a picture with the words "Good night, sweet prince" as the message, someone updates the Wikipedia page to reflect it, then everyone acts like it's the real thing. Then, when someone DOES die, it gets posted on /b/ and everyone acts like it's a total fake, mixing in epithets as needed.

By the way, I thought our politics board was pretty tame.

Only the best of 2009 so far. I still believe John Lennon's and JFK's were more dynamic.
