Qualifications include prior experience covering a major pro-sports beat at a mid- to large-size daily newspaper, proven sourcing and interviewing skills and ability to write in/for a range of styles and platforms, including social media, breaking news, blogs, profiles and authoritative analysis. This is an extremely competitive beat covering one of the most-followed professional sports teams in Kansas City.

This is to replace Bob Dutton, who went to Tacoma to replace Ryan Divish at the News-Tribune (also owned by McClatchy). Never thought I'd see Bob leave Kansas City. He and Dick Kaegel provided great coverage of that team. Good luck to all!

Could totally see that move by Dutton given that the Tacoma sports editor Dale Phelps was a long time assistant sports editor at the Kansas City Star before heading to the Northwest. Phelps is a great guy and great person to work for. Good for Dutton.

    Bumped back up to top...

Andy McCullough (@mcculloughSL), the Yankees beat writer for Newark Star-Ledger, is heading to Kansas City. Good get for Jeff and his sports staff.

Good hire for the Star. The wording of the ad made me laugh, selling the job as "covering one of the most-followed professional sports teams in Kansas City." Did the Scouts and Kings move back into town? The Royals did outdraw Sporting KC by about 1,500 per game.
