The number at the top of a column or the side of a row means that the digits in that row must equal that number without duplicating any digits. It's a logic/math puzzle.

You learn the particular combos ... Three can only be 3+1. Four digits equalling eleven can only be 1+2+3+5. Six digits totalling 21 can only be 1+2+3+4+5+6. ETc.

You have to think of it like a crossword, but instead of 26 letters to choose from, you have the nine numerals (no 0), knowing you can't repeat in any line, horizontally or vertically. You have to find the points where there's only one option, then work from there. A three-box 23, for instance, can only be 6, 8 and 9. An eight-box 42, which seems to give you no clues at all, can't use the number 3 in its line (all nine numbers add up to 45).

Try a small, easy one and you'll get a sense for it ...

That box with 4 on top is the clue. The answer would be 1 and 3 (since the two sqaures to the right of it have to add up to 4). Then if you look up two squares, there's a 6 and 5 next to eachother. The six is the clue for the first column the five is the clue for the second column.

Ahhh...so all anyone had to say was it was the BLANK boxes. I was thinking we were trying to fit two numbers into the boxes that already had one in them.
