JV, jayvee or junior varsity?

Going through our microfilm one day, I came across a cross country headline from the 60s calling a team the "Hill and dale boys"

No reference of junior varsity should be made in a story. When I was in high school, the local papers would put the JV score at the bottom of the box for the varsity team.

    That's all they deserve.

    Just my opinion.

    Ridiculous blanket statement.

That's all that needs to be said.

No major paper covers the JV team.

    A feature story, perhaps...

Sports Style Guide and Reference Manual, my other bible along with AP, says JV is actually acceptable in first reference. But junior varsity and then JV would be my general call.
