Spoken by a provincial premier who -- opening a lecture on media studies -- declares he doesn't read newspapers or watch news programs. ??? ??? ??? ???

Former premier Ralph Klein kick-started his new role as media studies chair and lecturer at Mount Royal College by calling journalists "lazy" and admitting he doesn't watch TV newscasts or read newspapers.

Although the $2.5-million chair is not a faculty position, Klein will teach and lecture roughly 250 first-year journalism, broadcasting and public relations students at the college and make guest appearances in their classrooms.

Many were surprised by his comments.

"The media were lazy," said Klein, reflecting on his interactions with journalists while serving as premier of Alberta for 14 years and mayor of Calgary for nine.

"I can say it now because I am out of politics. A sound bite a day keeps the editor away," said Klein, himself a former broadcast journalist.

If I were lazy, how could I be posting on SJ all day?

I doubt they even got his quotes right. He probably said "crazy," as in funloving.

I was wondering whether Ralphie was in his usual state i.e. drunk, when he gave his lecture.

Never cared much for his "man of the people" shtick. He seemed bound and determined to hide ANY speck of intelligence.
