That struck me, too. I'm used to seeing Pos write much longer.

don't know this for sure because i only read it online, but it looks like this was the back of book 'point after' column.

edit: joe's 'SI' blog confirms it is the 'point after' column. if you want more from joe on the nick charles story:

That's what I figured. His versatility is impressive.

Old-school storytelling: well-woven details, no tricks or flourishes.

I knew and worked ringsides with Nick in both Washington and Atlanta. A pro and a sweetheart.

Here's another good one, by Steve Hummer, almost a year ago...

Big Nick and Hickman fan as well. CNN Sports had a lot of talent back in the day.

Oh, and as usual, Pos nailed it.

Just checked the length of the column and, actually, it checks in at 947 words, which is anywhere from 50 to 100 words longer than most Point Afters (and about 150 to 200 words longer than the last year or two of Life of Reilly). Still much shorter than most of his stuff, but not short for that stage.

Great stuff, although it seemed to end abruptly. Maybe that's because I was expecting a longer read. But it just sorta stopped.

    Metaphor for the subject.
