Murray's column about losing his eye has always been my fave piece of his writing. As a guy with only one good eye, it sure hits home. Brilliant stuff....

Different era, man and style. My eye was on Murray.
Certainly unequaled the last two or three generations.

    (Nice "Slap" reference.)

That is the best piece I've read. Period.

    Great thread.

And just like that, I went to Amazon, got Red Smith's "To Absent Friends," Jim Murray's "The Great Ones" and also his autobiography.

Total cost: $18.46, and all three were listed as being in very good shape.

    Thanks, folks.

His columns on losing his wife and losing his eyesight (linked above) are two of the most moving things I've ever read. I've read them periodically over the years and they always touch me, every darn time.

Jim Murray was the answer to the question. It was rhetorical.

Once Smith got his mention, I just wanted to make sure Heinz got his.

I know. I know. I'm just playing. The three are certainly 1a, 1aa and 1aaa.
I'm going to see if I can find the Murray eye column...

I wonder if someone could find the link of Reilly's piece on him in SI... I'm not talking about his obit, but Reilly wrote a really good piece on him back when he was still writing features on a regular basis. I want to say it was early 90s, but maybe late 80s...

You know, Joe Williams was pretty good in his day. (No relation, just homage.) But no arguing with the three above.
