Blasts the tax issue compromise between Obama and Republicans... calls for permanent end to unemployment insurance... says recipients should have to repay unemployment...

Let's try to keep politics out of this one.

The issue he has with the tax compromise is that it's not permanent and that the deal includes a large (in his opinion) amount of new government spending.

The unemployment thing is more controversial, of course. It'd be nice if people were responsible enough to save or even buy private unemployment insurance. But they aren't so it can't go anywhere.

In fairness to DeMint, it reads like he says "at some point" it should become a loan. Not right off the bat. But after a certain amount of time.

But I don't understand the idea that anyone can just go get a job. Aren't there more people laid off than jobs available? Someone gets squeezed, no matter what.

The idea is that if everyone is left to their own devices, a few of them start their own Subways (/crossthread) and in the long run, that sort of behavior creates more jobs in the future. Paying for unemployment eases short-term pain but creates long-term problems. Or so the idea goes.

DeMint wants to end unemployment benefits. Pat Buchanan wants to dial back voting to just property owners.

But neither are elitists. Yeah, right.

No, he doesn't. That's not fair. Again, he wants "at some point" for the benefits to be a loan instead of a handout. I'm not saying I necessarily agree with that, but you can disagree with him without exaggerating his position.

Um, you have heard of prima facie, right?

So, basically, DeMint would like to see the return of sharecropping.

I figure since the tax cuts were extended, unemployment will drop a good two points in the next month or so making the unemployment benefits concession moot. So he's got nothing to worry about.

Those parents whose kids get discounted or free lunches at school? Child abusers if you believe one GOP strategist.
