Gowdy, after he was pushed off NBC, worked one contract at CBS, and then was fired from there.

Read his fine autobiography years ago, "Preferred Lies and Other Tales."

I always associate Whitaker with being the voice of Secretariat's run to the Triple Crown.

Whitaker did play by play for the first half of Super Bowl I. Michaels, Nantz and Joe Buck have done the play by play for their networks for years.

    Trivia question:

Who is the only other living human to have done television play by play at the Super Bowl?

And the non-living are Ray Scott, Gowdy, Summerall, Enberg and Gifford. And Jack Buck. The same number of Presidents since the Super Bowl began. weird.

    RIP to Jack.

I don't remember Gowdy at CBS either.
I never liked Gowdy's call, at all. I was just a kid, but I followed this stuff.

Gonna have to say an 'in his prime', minimalist Pat Summerall, paired with a young John Madden, was the best combo of all time. Summerall with a sober Tom Brookshier was excellent as well.

I am just reading that before my time, Summerall did color. Interesting.

Summerall started as a color guy in the '60s for CBS, which loved its retired Giants a great deal. At one point, he was the color guy and Gifford did play by play. Then Gifford went to ABC and Summerall became play by play.
