I believe that strategy is known as the "self-cleaning oven."

When it comes to arming rebels or dictators or freedom fighters, the CIA doesn't seem to have a great ROI throughout history.

One defining characteristic of American foreign policy since 1945 has been our knack for supporting and arming whichever side in some country's conflict that can't fight a lick. The biggest exception I can think of is the Afghan rebels, who of course then morphed into Al Qaeda and the Taliban.

FWIW, we arm the Kurds and they seem to be the most effective fighting force in the region these days. They just also only fight over historical Kurdish holdings. So, their use is limited to the areas they're willing to fight over.

The Kurds have their own agenda, which they've had for centuries. Our blithe assumption that various groups ask for our help because they share our goals is one reason we get in trouble.

Just think . . . the mighty Americans and Soviets joining together to quash the mujahideen so Al Qaeda never gets off the ground.

Sometimes the greatest ideas never come to fruition because we are too fucking stubborn and lacking in imagination to even consider them. We're like cavemen: "A is today's boogeyman. B is fighting A. Must support B."

If anything Obama started was going to fail, that's it.
