  1. Trevor Hoffman retired today. Is he a Hall of Fame player?

    He is the all-time leader in saves with 601 and had a career ERA of 2.87 with an ERA+ of 141

    What say you?

    It's a way of comparing a pitcher's effectiveness relative to the rest of the league, taking the pitcher's ballpark into account.

    I think Hoffman gets in, but it might take him a couple years, and it might be after Rivera. To me, he's a step above save accumulators like Lee Smith and Jeff Reardon, and the only guy in Rivera's class the past decade (two decades?).

    ERA divided by (League average ERA for that time period with an adjustment for park factor) times 100.

    141 means his ERA was 41% better than an average pitcher would have been in the same leagues and ballparks for his career.
