Is "this season" necessary?

I'm writing an advance and want to know if the phrase "this season" is necessary as in "10 games this season."

Is it understood that this season is what is being discussed, or should it be explained?

Context is everything, so not having read your story, I can't answer that.

Just please don't use the announcer phrase "on the season." :)

In general, no, it's not needed if you are using the present tense.

But if you are comparing last season and this season, then you probably need it for clarity.

Note: The use of "this season" during the offseason is confusing, as it could refer to the one just finished or the one coming up. Use other phrasing during the offseason.
