Is the United States the best?

Anyone still claiming that the U.S. is the greatest country in the world? Anyone? Anyone?

 

Actually they do, and Canada answers the call years ahead of the U.S.

 

I hate to break it to you, but billions of people around the world view a country rife with cultural racism, a bizarre tolerance of public murder, that worships the superficial and whose vaunted political system elects a con man as its top leader, as anything but great.
I mean, the very title of this thread illustrates what isn't great about it.
The U.S. is a country born on third base that loves to brag it hit a triple.

America is the best at claiming to be the best. We've got the best movie stars. Best porn stars. Best baseball teams. But, are we the best country overall? Hmmmmm. Not sure.

 

Born on third base? Uhhhh, you know we, like, had a revolution and overthrew the greatest empire of the late 18th Century to create this country, right? A lot of blood was shed to create, improve and protect this imperfect union. Dumb analogy.

Is this country the "best?" I dunno. What's the criteria? That's a pretty vague question. Is the answer derived from "Where would you want to live the most?" Most people are probably going to answer where they grew up is "the best."

It's rather easy to say, "No, the U.S. is not the best, and here are reasons X, Y and Z." But I'll turn the question around — Which country IS "the best?" If you're telling me this country is NOT the best, you have to have one in mind that IS the best, and you must have reasons for making such a determination. So, tell us which country IS the best, and show your work.

 

I always like to say, if a group of people today had a revolution and built their country as we built ours (ethnic cleansing, slavery), we would demand they be executed for crimes against humanity.

And once we did that, we found ourselves sitting on land containing $35 trillion of natural resources. A land separated by oceans from where all the terrible battles of the 20th century were being contested, allowing us to emerge from the ruins unscathed.

Born on third base? Maybe not. More like hit a single, advanced to second when we lynched the opposing team's shortstop and second baseman, went to third when we banished the third baseman to a reservation, then stole home after sticking 45,000 nuclear warheads in the face of the catcher.

 

Yeah, probably. Attitudes have a tendency to shift over the course of 250 years.

So which country is the best? Which country hit, in your view, the World Series-winning grand slam and why do you think so?
