Frantic, that is exactly what the jury is struggling with from what's being reported in Allison (trial's at Butler Co. courthouse) this evening. Jury asked judge to recess deliberations at 4pm today and asked to "sleep on it" until reconvening in the morning.

Judge said yes and the jury finished early for the day.

Some are worrying it could be deadlocked based in the insanity defense.

Jury sent home for the weekend. Deliberations are done for the day.

    BREAKING: Becker verdict is in

Just got word that a verdict is in 5 minutes ago. Everyone is waiting for the Thomas family to arrive from Parkersburg to the Butler Co. Courthouse in Allison.

Verdict expected to be read at 10:30am CST.

EDIT: Still waiting for the family. Aaron Thomas was here in Des Moines this morning to testify to state lawmakers asking them to pass legislation that would release psych patients facing criminal charges directly into the hands of law enforcement officials.

Guilty on count of 1st degree. Jury being polled to confirm it.

Armchair, I'm watching the Thomas presser now via the Waterloo Courier, in case KCCI isn't carrying it.

Watching the Outside the Lines special on this. Glad to see justice was served.

No, Shoeless, she has a point, but not what you think. If you read my post and clicked on the link from earlier today, the Thomas family was in Des Moines this morning, asking lawmakers to consider passing a bill in committee making hospitals contact authorities to pick up anyone who has committed a crime and is being treated at a hospital.

Had the hospital notified the cops before letting him go, this wouldn't have happened, that is her assertion. The procedures to keep him in custody or in the hospital for further evaluation was what failed. Not the justice system.

The hospital didn't even called his parents to pick him up.

When Aaron Thomas finished his testimony, that's when they got the call that the jury reached a verdict. They had to rush back up I-35 and eastbound on Hwy 3 to get back to Allison. It's about an hour drive.

Justice may have been served, but it does little to end the long process of what the Beckers, the Thomases, and P-burg will have to deal with, now that the only thing left is the sentencing on April 14th. If this bill, barring any jackass lawmaker or hospital association whining about more paperwork, passes, the Thomases and the Beckers hope that this doesn't happen to anyone else in this state.

I'm just tired of hearing society today proclaiming nothing being someone's own fault. There is always some outside factor or illness or someone else to blame. In some cases, perhaps this one, there were outside factors. But because no one seems to take responsibility for their actions, I don't give a pass to anyone.

Gun manufacturers don't kill people. Cigarette makers don't force people to smoke. Every time you lose a ballgame you didn't get cheated by the refs, etc.
