INFORMAL POLL: Graceland

Just saw on 60 Minutes a mention of Graceland, and the fact that it costs $28 a head to tour Elvis' home.

So, I'm wondering - INFORMAL POLL TIME - has anyone here forked over the dough and toured what I imagine is the most morbid/garish place on earth?

Me? I don't think I can picture myself ever going there.

Yep. Well worth it. Especially with the Christmas lights.

    Overrated album.

    Sorry ... wrong thread.

(If I visited the area, I'd go to Graceland. Why the hell not?)

When I blew through Memphis I hung out outside for a few minutes, signed the wall and headed to the hotel where MLK was shot and spent some time at Sun Records and Beale Street.

    I did.

If you include parking it's $38.

Well, there you go, Dan. I've visited the hotel where MLK was shot. I missed out on Sun Records, but hit Beale Street - places where something happened. It just seems to me the G'land is somewhere to go see where a famous guy once wallowed in excess. Holds no interest for me.

But maybe my outlook is colored by the fact that I'm not really an Elvis fan. From the 50's movies to the sequined jumpsuit, he'll always be kitsch to me, really.

The kitsch factor was what appealed to me most, actually...

I went and thought it was great. I did do the Spinal Tap "Heartbreak Hotel" thing out by the garden where he's buried.

I did Sun Studios too and that was very, very fucking cool.

    Not to do it twice.
I feel sorry for anyone living in Memphis who gets out-of-town guests.

Can you take us to Graceland?
    Sure, it's our 29th visit.

I didn't do the plane or the car collection.

Went at the wife's insistence like eight years ago, and don't remember it being that much. It's worth it ... once.

I went once, with my aunt and my grandmother. We had a blast.

    But once was enough.

I've been to Graceland Too in Holly Springs, Miss., a couple of times.
