I heard R. Dean Taylor's one-hit wonder Indiana Wants Me on the way back from a game tonight. Excellent song and the only prominent one I can think of that has Indiana in its title. It got me to thinking what some of my favorite city and state songs are. Some obvious, some not off the top of my head and I know I'm forgetting tons more ...

Sweet Home Alabama -- Lynyrd Skynyrd
Rainy Night In Georgia -- Brooke Benton by way of Tony Joe White
The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia -- Vicki Lawrence (yeah, I like that song)
    Mainline Florida -- Eric Clapton
    Kentucky Rain -- Elvis
    Ohio -- CSN&Y
Indiana Wants Me -- R. Dean Taylor
    California Love -- TuPac
Going To California -- Led Zeppelin
    Allentown -- Billy Joel
    Philadelphia Freedom -- Elton John
Memphis Tennessee -- Chuck Berry, Johnny Rivers, et al
Jesus Just Left Chicago -- ZZ Top
    London's Burning -- Clash
Werewolves Of London -- Warren Zevon
What Made Milwaukee Famous -- Jerry Lee Lewis
    Indianapolis -- Bottle Rockets

What are some of your favorites?

  8. there's a damn good reason for that. fuck hoosiers. nothing redeeming has ever come from that state. if they turned it into one giant fucking landfill, it would be a good start. if they made it an even bigger landfill than it already is, it would be a good start.

    nice job, martin. well said.

    You missed another Indiana song:

    Gary, Indiana!
    What a wonderful name,
Named for Elbert Gary of judiciary fame.
Gary, Indiana, as a Shakespeare would say,
Trips along softly on the tongue this way--
Gary, Indiana, Gary Indiana, Gary, Indiana,
Let me say it once again.
Gary, Indiana, Gary, Indiana, Gary, Indiana,
That's the town that "knew me when."
If you'd like to have a logical explanation
How I happened on this elegant syncopation,
I will say without a moment of hesitation
    There is just one place
    That can light my face.
    Gary, Indiana,
    Gary Indiana,
Not Louisiana, Paris, France, New York, or Rome, but--
    Gary, Indiana,
    Gary, Indiana,
    Gary Indiana,
    My home sweet home.

    Bobby McGee

One day up near salinas, lord, I let him slip away,
He’s looking for that home and I hope he finds it,
But I’d trade all of my tomorrows for one single yesterday
To be holding bobby’s body next to mine.

Freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose,
Nothing, that’s all that bobby left me, yeah,
But feeling good was easy, lord, when he sang the blues,
Hey, feeling good was good enough for me, hmm hmm,
Good enough for me and my bobby mcgee.

La la la, la la la la, la la la, la la la la
La la la la la bobby mcgee.
La la la la la, la la la la la
La la la la la, bobby mcgee, la.
