    Seriously, why would you even want him teaching anybody else how to hit? Sure, he had tremendous power, even before he "bulked up," but he was so inconsistent outside of the home runs.

    If you go a full season (154 games; 585 plate appearances) in your prime (age 27), and you bat .201, should you be precluded from ever being a hitting instructor?

    Ragu: this was my question. Didn't mcgwire hit .189 one of those years? Maybe there should be a rule that anyone who ends up under the Mendoza line can't become a hitting coach.

    He hit .189 the year he was called up ('86). He's a career .263 hitter who had one season of 250+ ABs over .300. A must-hire, if you ask me.
