In Texas, "Canadian" is the new code for "black"

Ok, this is so downright bizarre that it could be from the Onion.

Earlier this week a columnist with the Houston Chronicle uncovered an email from Harris County assistant district attorney Mike Trent who, in a congratulatory note to a junior prosecutor, used the word "Canadians" to describe blacks on a jury.

But this is the best part:

Others, including the columnist with the Houston Chronicle initially thought the reference to Canadians may have been a misspelling of Californians, who are themselves seen to espouse many of the same liberal values as Canadians.

Hopefully this Trent fellow can be remembered for his take on society, and this incident doesn't just blow over.
Sounds like (and I haven't met the guy) a racist remark.
Some folks just can't let go of deep-rooted beliefs, customs and values.

I thought Canadian was a class 2A powerhouse in the panhandle.

  4. In the back-and-forth insult count between some aspects of North American societies, this is a trickle against a torrent.

Or the river that runs through same, on its way to the Red.

    Who mentioned anything about "insult"?

I think it's astonishingly funny that a small small town racist wanted a new code word to replace the "n" word, and picked "Canadian".

"Hey, look at that guy over at the fourth tee. When did they let Canadians join this club"?

So once Al Sharpton gets wind of this, will we have to start calling actual Canadians "Northerners"?

Or "People of the Ice and Snow"

The thread title makes it sound as if it's a widespread thing.

I think the writer takes a huge leap saying Canadians is replacing the "N' word. He's actually replacing "blacks."

I've heard it used in more than a few places in California.
