I'm getting SI for $20 a year!

Got an offer I couldn't refuse in the mail yesterday. I can get SI for $20 for six months. But if I pay now, I can get an extra six months for free. AND I get a free NFL team jacket of my choice.

Outstanding. You bet that sucker went right back out in the mail today with a check. Less than 50 cents an issue? Can't beat it!

They'd have to pay me $50 to hang that Browns jacket in my closet though . . .

I have been getting Tennis magazine for $12 a year and also have been giving a gift subscription for the same price.

I get an invoice in the mail asking if I want to renew the subscriptions at the "protected" price of . . . $15 per subscription.

Meanwhile, the current issue contains an offer to new subscribers at . . . $10 per year.

So I put the $10 offer and the "protected price" offer in the envelope and wrote a note saying "Sure, I would love to renew these subscriptions . . . but only at the $10 price you are offering new subscribers."

    I haven't heard back.

    I think I'm paying something like $9 a year for Esquire. That's a steal.

My big magazine deal is a year of People for $39.99.

  6. I get like six different mags, including SI, Time and Newsweek, for free by trading in unused frequent flier miles on airlines that I rarely (if ever) fly anymore. The miles were about to expire anyway.

It's hardly dirt-cheap at $25 a month (um, nor is it a magazine), but the NYTimes impressed the heck out of me two weeks ago when I subscribed for the first time. Went online and they were offering three months at half off for daily subscribers, so I took that deal. Then three days later in the mail I got an offer for six months at half off. Rats. I called customer service and asked if I could possibly turn my original three months into six. Guy put me on hold, came back and said they'd honor the six-month mailing- after my original three months were up! So nine months at half price. Not bad.

what was that great magazine site that people talked about in the must-have mags thread?

I get all my magazine subscriptions off eBay. Rolling Stone is $4 a year (plus six bucks shipping), SI is $34 (shipping included). Lots of other cheap ones, too.
