In all seriousness, who had the best year of sports commentary in 2012? I'd be interested to see someone collate some columnists' best works from the previous year. And not the phony tug at your heartstrings stuff, but commentary about sports and society, etc. I'd surmise Jeff MacGregor and Howard Bryant would be up there.

What does he mean when he says Red Smith is the Pulitizer Prize winner? Surely someone as Big and Sports and Journalism as Mr. Big Sports Journo would know Dave Anderson and Jim Murray also won Pulitzers for sports commentary, while Mike Royko, Jimmy Breslin, Murray Kempton and other winners wrote about sports during their honored years.

Would the revelation that Whitlock actually is BIGSPORTSWRITER be more or less shocking than the Keyser Soze reveal?

    It would be similarly illogical.

Whitlock has the rare gift of making some very strong points wrapped in a self-defeating premise.

That's a kind way of saying he's a shitty writer with the occasional good idea.

Dan Wetzel. No one else is that close, in my opinion.

Wetzel is damned good. Also an Adrian Wojnarowski fan, but he's just NBA, I think.
