Probably. My cousin scored high in the ACTs and SATs and whatever else tests they gave her and got offered a buttload of scholarships to fine schools. She could have done anything she wanted.

She opted for an associate's degree in management and now operates a Domino's Pizza and makes $50K in an area where $35K will get you a modest 1,500 sq. ft. house, a Lexus payment and plenty left over for everything else.

    I fucking hate my cousin.

I don't know I have done the SID gig and did not like it very much. But maybe I will go into TV and or Radio broadcasting and do that for a while.

  9. It's funny reading the title to this thread: If you left the journalism biz today . . . Because I'm desperately trying to get back in and have been for the past year. After I was unceremoniously let go from first and only gig in my six's professional career, I've worked the third shift at Wal-Mart stocking freezers and after getting married and moving to Chicago six months later I have been behind a Starbucks bar making double tall soy lattes and upside down Caramel macchiatos.

Since the move, I've sent clips out to most of the Chicagoland newspapers and have applied for every kind of journalism position advertised in this city. The times I've been truly at peace was out covering a high school baseball or softball game for one of the papers in the suburbs. Writing is what I do. Journalism, newspapers in particular, is my passion. After being forced out, once I get back in, I have no intention of leaving, whether I'm covering sports, news, business, Podunk town meetings, etc. If I left the journalism biz today? I'm already there and I'm miserable.

  10. Technical Writer.

They seem to make 60k for just explaining stuff to people, which is essentially what journalism is.

  11. I like the Barack Obama route - law school, followed by professorship/community organizing and activism and authorship on the side.

    My top two
    Screenwriter/director of dark comedies
Teaching journalism to either college or high schoolers.

If I had to leave today, I'd likely take up the family greyhound racing business, though there is about as much money there as is here nowadays
