If you get laid off or bought out what will you do?

  1. Look for another job in journalism

When/if it happens to me, I'm done. Curious what others think...

I'll at least be looking for a job before I am laid off. That's for sure.

Already doing so. I'm waiting for the next round of buyouts at my place and I'm probably done.

    It's hardly the same thing...

I'm moving to Montana to open a fabric store where Mizzou, Slappy and Inky will live in a yurt Inky builds of goatskin in the backyard and sell drugs through the drive-thru while Mustang, Dre and I sort thread by color.

I'm only slightly joking. If I get laid off, I'm done with newspapers. Beyond that, I don't know.

    Probably work as a stripper.

One serious option I'm thinking of would be to get an office job out of journalism. I'm pretty adept with computers/office software, etc. and I know telephone etiquette. Another would be to learn to be a bartender.

  7. Wow. 100 percent. That's crazy.

I'm laid off and have been looking for that next step. My search does not involve newspapers.

  9. Look for a job outside of journalism? Where else will we find a high-stress, low-paying job that drains us emotionally with little reward?

I'm thinking coal miner or teacher.

Coal miners make good money though.

The first thing I would do is figure up how much money I have and how long I can live without getting a job.
Then I'd look around, and assuming I didn't or couldn't move, figure out my local options and take the best one.
I'd probably take a real hard look at niche publishing. But that's just me.

Public school teachers get state benefits and three months off.
