If you could write a 5,000-word takeout on one athlete, who would it be?

Joe Don Looney. That guy was nuts.

    Mr Mouth,

Looney was an original ... and an original steroid user. I know SI did a piece about him when what passed for his NFL career was winding down.

    Mr Express,

Ryan coulda/shoulda been like Mark Spitz as a gold collector--but there was definitely something about him that suggested he was a very unhappy young man. The Gerry Lindgren thing might work out too.

Grew up on a Washington dairy farm, and is one of the most traveled American players in history. One of the pioneer Yanks Abroad, playing in England (including for Millwall, England's answer to Philly), Spain and Germany. Death metal god, lives in a German castle and body-slammed the Borussia Moenchengladbach mascot.

Named to four World Cup squads (1990, 98, 02, 06). I'd be interested to hear how he really feels about getting snubbed for a start in 2002, instead sitting behind Brad Friedel.

This wasn't 5,000 words, but it was a pretty good story.

    Mr Express,

I remember that piece. There was story enough to go long, that's for sure.

    Great question.

Just because I've never understood his exodus from the game, Barry Sanders.

Others: Mike Tyson, if I was able to spend a few days with him; Pete Sampras or Anna Kournikova; Magic Johnson; Jeff Gordon. Lots of others, but maining Sanders.

Sid Finch and his 120mph fastball. Seriously, Football - Walter Payton. Hoops - Magic before magic, "Pitsol Pete", Baseball - the best player ever-Willie Mays.

I know the last person I would want to do it on - Eric Staal. At a certain point, you just realize there is nothing very interesting about some people.

I'd love to do 5,000 words on the lives of Melvin Scott, Jackie Manuel and Jawad Williams. Oh, the stories they could tell.
