    I think it is odd that Romney didn't run for re-election as governor of MA in 2006. Most politicians at the time of a presidential nomination currently hold office.

    That has rarely happened in the last 40 years and the two exceptions I can think of had different circumstances:

    Reagan and Carter were both of office but Reagan had been governor for two complete terms and Georgia at the time wouldn't allow governors to succeed themselves, thus Carter was out office in 1976.
