If I start a/an RIP thread...

    I think the rule in writing is, if it comes in front of a vowel sound, it gets "an." If it comes in front of a consonant sound, it gets "a." I could be wrong, though.

    No, you are correct. Except in Canada, where is it spelled "eh."

    Why would it be "an RIP" then? R is a consonant sound. And don't say it's because R sounds like AHHH...that's a bullshit explanation.
