If a pigeon dumped on a bridge, would it make a sound when it fell?

Pigeons took toll on Minn. bridge

    August 22, 2007

    Associated Press Writer

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Pounded and strained by heavy traffic and weakened by missing bolts and cracking steel, the failed Interstate 35W bridge over the Mississippi River also faced a less obvious enemy: Birds, specifically pigeons.

Inspectors began documenting the buildup of pigeon dung on the span near downtown Minneapolis two decades ago.

Experts say the corrosive guano deposited all over the span's framework helped the steel beams rust faster.

Although investigators have yet to identify the cause of the bridge's Aug. 1 collapse, which killed at least 13 people and injured about 100, the pigeon problem is one of many factors that dogged the structure.

I was recently walking into a major league baseball park's media entrance and there's a bridge you have to walk under from the parking lot. Pigeons are flying all around and sitting in little roosts on the beams underneath the bridge, and there's one spot under a popular place for the pigeons, and there's a beam underneath that spot. You can see a pile of pigeon shit a good 10 inches deep up there.
