7 away . When it happens, will the accomplishment be on same plane as Rose and Cobb
    4000 hits?

It's a remarkable accomplishment, but no. It's been pretty well-established that the Japanese leagues are about equivalent to Double-A or Triple-A. If you're going to say Ichiro has 4,000 hits, you might as well add the minor league totals for everyone else to their career total. And if that's the case, Derek Jeter (3,308 hits in the majors, 551 in the minors) is also closing in on 4,000.

Not even, except in Japan. It's like when UConn's women "broke" UCLA's men's record. If you were to merge the record book, it's something. But they're not.

Seems like The Yankees want to make a big deal about it to sell tickets.

Pete Rose had 427 hits in the minors. Ty Cobb had 166 documented, plus probably a few more because he was in an independent league briefly. Edgar Martinez had 692, which would put him at 2,939 for his career.

It's worthy of comment, but it's not "4,000 hits."

Baseball-Reference has a list that that appears to only include retired players but tallies up most hits across the majors, Japan and the minors: http://bit.ly/18qIWpH

while we're at it, didn't Josh Gibson hit about 900 career homers?

I rolled a total of 4,011 hits for players in my Strat-o-Matic days.
