I wouldn't bet on it (Nationwide sports betting)

I think there are a few states that already have the right to legalize sports wagering. Montana and Delaware come to mind, but there may be a couple others.

I've looked into the issue when I was trying to convince some people we needed professional sports wagering in Kentucky (note the word professional). Considering our proximity to other states with pro teams, it could be a windfall for the state.

The pro leagues and NCAA will fight this with every ounce of their being. Given the recent stuff with Tim Donaghy (sp?),the NBA ref, the PERCEPTION that games could be fixed is just waaaay too dangerous.

Counterpoint: Most of the match-fixing and point-shaving scandals in Europe have been discovered by legalized bookmaking operations noticing odd patterns in wagering. In a way, a legalized book provides more oversight. Because, after all, the book doesn't want to get screwed out of money by somebody manipulating the score.

It would be more ruinous to the country than the legalization of pot and prostitution combined.

    How?

The UK has bookmakers shops all over the place. It's not ruined as a nation by it.

Yeah, and Canada has guns all over the place and hasn't been ruined, either.

Listen to talk radio... Do you hear all those moron experts who would have unfettered access to plopping what is left of their bank accounts on Duke-Villanova?

All we need are thousands of people who think they can stagger to the local 7-Eleven and get out of a recession-created financial hole by putting all they have on the Steelers -6 in the Super Bowl.

Those people are already playing the lottery. Or going to the tribal casino. Or bingo hall. Or putting down a bet with the local bookie.

There is a massive number of people who don't spend a CENT on the three gambling modes you mention who would bet sports.

If they are dumb enough to waste the mortgage on sports betting, they will waste it elsewhere.
