East St. Louis that is. And I survived to tell the tale.

I highly recommend "The Right Kind of Heroes" (I'm pretty sure that's the title) by Kevin Horrigan. It's about Bob Shannon when he was East St. Louis High's football coach. It's a great read and still is on my bookshelf a good 15 years later.

When you go through National City, though, you take your life clean driving record into your own hands.

Is it just me, or does ESL have more stop signs than any city in the nation? Drive a block. STOP. Drive half a block. STOP. Drive a block. STOP. Drive a block. STOP. Middle of the block. STOP. Drive a block. STOP. Drive half a block. STOP.

I used to have to go there regularly. Always was worried I'd come out to find my car up on blocks.

I was parked in a fenced-in lot, thankfully.
