Make sure it's a place named in at least one song title.

Anyplace in Oklahoma is automatically ruled out in this round.

While some of these amuse me, some probably ought to be given serious consideration (like Portland) and I'd like to hear some of their redeeming qualities.

    UT,

My nephew's home base is Portland. You like his music.

    Need I say more? ;D

Without knowing the particulars of your situation, I'd suggest living in a metropolitan area that has a good balance between cost of living and stuff to do.

In other words, I'd rule out New York, LA, San Francisco, DC, Boston, etc., because the cost of living is out of control. At the other end of the spectrum, I'd rule out Jacksonville, Birmingham, Indianapolis and Kansas City.

The cities I would consider, which are both affordable and cool:

    -- Portland
    -- Denver
    -- Nashville
    -- Charlotte
    -- San Antonio
    -- Austin
    -- Raleigh/Durham
    -- Minneapolis
