Damn, I'm starting to look forward to getting this place. I just thought it was a rip-off of Whole Foods.

This question isn't even close. The best food, without a doubt, is at Whole Foods. If you can find one and are able to expense a deli selection or do a small shop, there isn't a better place in the country.
Problem is, if you shop for a family, you're going to have to knock off a small federal banking institution on the way to Whole Foods.

A locally owned place that has slightly higher prices but is clean as a whistle and specializes in customer service.
I'd much rather go there than somewhere else to save five bucks but leave pissed off and disgusted.

They know my name. They know what I like. They tell me when my favorite things are on special.

In Long Beach I always went to Ralph's or Vons or Albertsons or Lucky's.

Now in New England it's always Price Chopper.

So how often does porn, a quart of Wild Turkey, a box of condoms and some extra-strength panty liners go on sale?

    More often than you'd think.

My mom and dad took me here every Saturday (and yes, it was usually a combo trip with this place and Hess's, if you read the other thread):

Those aisles in the pics on the left, I've logged more miles there than I care to remember. And sitting at the stools at Charlie K's Pizza...

And there'd be somewhat-worthwhile concerts there from time to time as well...

    Ah, memories.

There's a Fresh Market right up the road from me. When it calls for a special item, that's where I head. But mostly I shop at Kroger for everyday needs.

I used to shop at Trader Joes when I lived in So Cal, but I don't think there is one close to me now.

every week: publix for the essentials and small, independent store called norman brothers (http://www.normanbrothers.com/) for good stuff - deli, prepared foods, bread, bakery. publix produce is revolting but we get basics like milk, eggs, and any mass produced products.

occasional trips: fresh market. love it, but it's not convenient

infrequent: costco, whole foods. WF is fine. i used to love going to costco when i lived elsewhere and it was less crowded but here it's a minimum of an hour every single time. i've never spent less than 20 minutes on line. ever. and 20 minutes is a miracle. my area could probably support five additional costcos.

we spend way too much of our household budget on food but it's one of the few indulgences we allow. i'd rather spend more and eat well.
