At least you'll get to pack your stuff up without a security guard looking over your shoulder. Most places, being laid off via voicemail means your security code doesn't work when you go back.

Has anyone ever actually had security grab them and throw them out when laid off?

Heaven forbid, if I were to lose my job, I'd be telling any exec. or security guy who tried to physically push me out the door that I have a very fragile body and they better hope I don't get hurt when they are pushing me out.

I'm very sorry to hear about this.
It's happened to me twice; once as a group of about 20 others, and once as part of an entire publication that closed. Trust me: there is no good way to hear this news. (But what they did to you really sucked).
The best I can say is that if you continue to work hard and you're bright and somebody that people want to work with, things will work out for you. Both of my two "layoffs" eventually led to much brighter opportunities. You just have to embrace them as they come and continue to employ what seems to be a very strong work ethic on your part.
    All the best.

I took a temporary gig at a daily newspaper as a copy editor/page designer. That lasted about a month before the temp agency called me and told me my assignment was over.

They called me on my day off. I didn't even get an opportunity to go collect my stuff. In fact, I was expressly denied that right. Someone from the temp agency went into the office to go grab my stuff and brought it in a box.

That brought to my mind the line from a Kelly Clarkson song: "I would never wish bad things, but I don't wish you well."

    That was so fucking dehumanizing.

First layoff I was involved with, they pushed a woman who was confined to a wheelchair out into the parking lot, wouldn't even let her use the phone to call her daughter to come and pick her up. Eventually, one of the staff who wasn't laid off went out to help her and make the phone call for her.

Gotta love the newspaper industry. Who'd she work for, JRC?

No, but from what I've read around here, JRC would have pushed her down the stairs.

When I was working for my last newspaper and they were laying people off, they were having security come in and escort people out without the opportunity to retrieve their personal belongings. I told my editor (who I really liked) if I got laid off he better get at least four security guys because we were going to make a brawl out of this. Strangely I never got laid off.
