I didn't need that money or vacation anyway

    Today: We finally got a FedEx tracking number, so that's a positive. Problem is, they're not shipping it until tomorrow, and FedEx, we're told, doesn't deliver on weekends, so it is supposed to be here Monday. Of course, if it's at all late, we're SOL, so my wife is planning on driving to Chicago on Monday to get a brand new passport. Thanks for nothing government.

    Fedex doesn't deliver on weekends? That doesn't sound right.

    Feds may suspend border rules to ease passport crunch

    WASHINGTON - The Bush administration may suspend a major post-9/11 security initiative to cope with increasingly angry complaints from Americans whose summer vacations are threatened by new passport rules.

    Forgive my ignorance, I've never had a passport....
    (Though it's really sounding like I should go get one now for any future vacation I might take.)

    When your wife applied for the name change, did she have to give up her old passport? or do you hang on to the old one until you get the new one?

    Because if she still has the old one, and what someone upthread said about bringing a copy of your marriage license is true, you should be fine.

    Any chance that's how it works?

    They do (to most places), but Saturday delivery costs extra and I have a feeling the gov't is not ponying up the extra $ for it.

    Jesus, Rusty, it sounds like the passport agency is staffed by people too smart to work for Sprint.

    Your problem might be resolved. They're supposed to announce today that for the rest of the summer, you can get back into the country with only a driver's license and a copy of your passport application.

    Under a plan approved by the Bush administration late Thursday and to be announced today, a new requirement for U.S. passports will be temporarily dropped for air travel to and from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and the Caribbean, officials say.

    Although the requirement affected travel to only a few countries, the added pressure on the State Department had delayed processing of all passports and had enraged international travelers.

    To regain entry to the U.S. through Sept. 30, these Western Hemisphere travelers would have to provide only photo identification such as a driver's license and proof that a passport application has been submitted.

    They also used to deliver on Sundays, but...

    In all seriousness, I am worried about getting a passport soon. I might as well go into the future and get my picture taken then for it, knowing how long it's going to take.

    Potential good news:

    http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/06/08/passports.ap/index.html

    WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Bush administration plans to suspend some of its new, post-September 11 requirements for traveling abroad, hoping to placate Congress and summer travelers who've had their vacation plans thwarted by delays in processing their passport applications.

    <snip>
    The proposal would temporarily lift a requirement that U.S. passports be used for air travel to and from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda, several lawmakers said Thursday.

    <snip>
    Under the proposal, travelers would have to present a State Department receipt, showing they had applied for a passport, and government-issued identification, such as a driver's license.

    Those without passports would receive additional security scrutiny, which could include extra questioning or bag checks, according to one official familiar with the discussions.

    Good luck, Rusty!

    Yes, you have to give up your old one. And as was said, the reason FedEx won't deliver on weekends is because the govt won't pony up to have it done. FedEx says it'll be here Monday, and that's good enough for the govt, even if it makes us nervous as hell.

    As for the new law, that's great. My wife has now cancelled her plans for Chicago, but we're calling around trying to get confirmation on what exactly constitutes proof she's applied for a passport she's still waiting to receive.

    Also, I would be unbelievable pissed off if I had missed my vacation, say, this week and now there's this rule that would have been in effect by the time I returned anyway. God I'd be so pissed off.

    BREAKING NEWS

    Updated: 32 minutes ago
    WASHINGTON - The Bush administration on Friday suspended some of its new, post-Sept. 11 requirements for traveling abroad, hoping to placate Congress and irate summer travelers whose vacations have been thwarted by delays in processing their passports.

    The proposal would temporarily lift a requirement that U.S. passports be used for citizens flying to and from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda.

    The suspension should allow the State Department to catch up with a massive surge in applications that has overwhelmed passport processing centers since the rule took effect this year. The resulting backlog has caused up to three-month delays for passports and ruined or delayed the travel plans of thousands of Americans.

    This is the kind of shit that would never happen for me. Or if it did, it would be a day late.

    Glad things worked out for you, rusty. If there's a casino at this place, you oughta stop in for a bit.
