how to handle off the record comments in this case...

    Here are a few things that could pare down the list of possible eyewitnesses. (I guess this is only relevant if the incident occurred during a class):

    1) What's the teacher's subject area?
    2) Was the incident in the morning or the afternoon?
    3) What's the student's year in school? (Junior, senior, etc.)

    If you can find these things, you can work other students to see if they can point you in the direction of somebody who would have been scheduled to be in the class at that time.

    Is there a specific law in your state regarding teacher-on-student assault? If so, check court records to see if the matter is being prosecuted. If the teacher has been suspended but is not being charged, that inconsistency may be worth a story someday on its own.
