Poin's point, I'm guessing, is that many well-connected writers manage to report the stories without habitual gushing about who called them back on the cell.

Maybe, but I would think people might wonder where he got his quotes from when he's in New York, and he's getting quotes from players across the country.

Stating that he spoke to them clears up whether these are pool quotes, or quotes he went out looking for himself. I doubt there were many people writing the column he did for SI today about Sunday's injuries making extra regular season games unrealistic.

 

i have no problem identifying how a quote was snared for a story. matter of fact, my paper requies it if you weren't at the event.
