How long until there is a black pope?

    Inside 10 years? 20? 50?

Few thought the U.S. would have a black president this soon, so why not a black pope?

What does the election of a black president in the U.S. have to do with the possibility of there being a black pope?

I didn't think I'd see a black president this soon.

I never even considered a black pope.

The tie is barriers being broken.

I see that part, but in terms of the real possibility of one being elected, these are very different roles and they are filled in very different ways.

To OOP: That's a given. The process of picking a pope is not a democratic process, although it would be kind of cool to get a true look at how one gets to be pope.

My question was more for the racial barriers being shattered, nothing more.

I predict there will be a black pope before there is another white cornerback playing in The NFL.

Xan, I see your point. I just have a bit more faith in this country's capacity to be progressive than I do in the Catholic Church's ability to do so.

Cardinal Francis Arinze of Nigeria was supposedly very deep in the running during the last conclave. He has taken over many of Cardinal Ratzinger's (Now Pope Benedixt XVI's) former duties since then. He certainly hasn't done anything to diminish his chances in the next go 'round.

How do we know that there isn't already a black pope?

I mean, some of them have been in the ground (or a crypt) for quite some time.
