How do you pick your prep Coach of the Year

Discussion in 'Journalism topics only' started by FireJimTressel.com, Nov 19, 2007.

  1. I'm about to pick our All-County volleyball team, and I'm curious what methods you guys use. I'll describe each coach's pros and cons and let me know who you'd pick. I'm not picking who you pick necessarily. I'm more interested in any points of view or questions you may have that I didn't think of. For the record, I'm leaning toward Coach A.

Quickly, for those who don't know Texas high school sports, Class 5A is the classification for the highest enrollment schools. It goes down to 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A.

    COACH A — Class 5A
Last year's team went to the regional semifinals. All of the hitters from last year's team graduated. The only returners for this year were a setter who split time last year, one of the best libero's in the state and a defensive specialist who turned into this year's top offensive player, even though she is undersized at 5-6. Last year's team won the school's fifth-straight district title. This year's team finished third in the district but advanced to the regional championship match - one round further than last year's team with all those seniors. In the regional final (same round as state quarterfinals) the team lost to the region's heavy favorite. Nobody else in the region beat that heavy favorite all season, though when the heavy favorite got to the state semifinals, it got swept by the eventual champ.

    COACH B — Class 4A
Last year's team won the regional title then lost in the state semifinals. Last year's team featured all juniors. It lost only one player, a server substitute who played mostly because she was a senior. This year, that group of seniors won the regional title and advanced to the state championship match, where it got swept.

My dilemma is that Coach B got his team deeper into the playoffs but was expected to get there. I'm leaning toward Coach A because he exceeded expectations. Anyone have any thoughts?

My stupid state seems to have this habit of choosing whatever coach won a state title.

  4. Nope none of this co-coach of the year crap. I'm going to pick one.

We e-mail ballots to the athletic directors, who then disseminate them to the coaches.

Perhaps you could ask some of the in-the-know volleyball coaches in the area and get their opinion. Since they know what's going on, they could definitely steer you in a direction. And all it takes is one e-mail out to five or six coaches (or more, depending on what you feel) and you'd have your answer in a day or less.

You could always put both on the wall, close your eyes, and throw a dart. Whichever one it lands closer to, there's your pick. But then of course you could miss and hit your co-worker. The other ideas are probably better.

You know, tressel, you should change the thread title to "Help me pick my coach of the year because I don't have the balls to make the pick myself."

I'd go with B. Something's got to be said for developing talent, right?

So the co-worker becomes your COY. Could be worse.
