How do you fix a @%&#ed up ankle?

Rolled my ankle pretty significantly this morning playing ultimate football. It looks like someone sliced a baseball in half and wedged it under my skin, then coloured (/crossthread) it purple.

Tried to stop and cutback to deflect a pass or cover an opponent, when my foot began to slide on the wet grass (not wearing cleats). I assume my foot hit a small hole or clump of grass and rolled completely over.

It rolled over more forward than sideways, if that makes any sense. Several people near me commented that they heard it pop. As soon as I hit the ground, writhing like a Jackson, Mississippi, stripper and moaning like a low-budget porn star, my foot felt like it was on fire. It hurt like crazy.

I had to be helped off the field, but was able to walk it off 10 minutes later and return to the game, albeit gingerly.

I wore my tightest pair of boots to work and walked on it through some minor pain, but nothing serious. When I got home after work, i took my boot off and found the purple swelling (hanging curve).

Since the injury occured this morning and was only treated with some Ibuprofen, do I need to do anything other than ice, compression and elevation? Or, do I need heat, etc.?

This is my first ever real ankle injury, and I really have no idea how to treat it.

  2. Ice and compression.
You'll need to wrap it. And ice it, about 20 minutes a day, twice a day for a day or two. Don't suprised if you can't walk tomorrow.
I roll my ankles all the time.

And a blowjob. I find those are great for swollen ankles - if you can get that order filled. ;)

    Thanks for the info.

Pharmacist says this prescription isn't getting filled. Controlled substance.

    R.I.C.E.
    Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation.
You'll need an ace bandage, an ice pack, some pillows, a couch and a little bell to ring so a serving wench can fetch you drinks and eats as needed.

Wrap the ankle, tight as you can stand, cover with ice pack, prop the bad ankle up some of the pillows, while placing the other under your head. Then kick back and watch the game(s). Also, take some Advil, it will help with the swelling.

    Elevate it, too.

I had a horse flip over on me last year at the ranch. My ankle hurt for nine months after. Can't tell you how many people reminded me sprains can be worse than breaks.

Stay off it as much as you can tomorrow. A hot tub the second day helped me -- mine was the size of a football.

    I feel for you.

Ankles can be problematic. Best is rest and ice. Those buggers can linger for a long time.
I rolled my ankle in 2004. It was okay after a week for walking and day-to-day stuff, but not really close to 100 percent for another 3-4 months. If it is not at 80-85% in a couple weeks, think about a doctor.
Surgery might be an option. If not it could linger for awhile.

As an aside, I'm from Canada, so a doctor and surgery is always an option for anything worse than a hangnail or headache.

I'm in the Army, so I have the same notions. I have my physician's number on speed dial. :D

I wouldn't rule out a doctor's visit right away. The same extreme ankle roll thing happened to me in college, and I thought I could just "walk it off and tough it out for a few days". When that didn't happen, I saw a doctor and found out the bone running up my foot to the pinkie toe had a spiral fracture.

He said if I would have come in soon after it happened, they could have casted it, put me on crutches for 6 weeks and I would have been fine. But since I walked on it so much afterward, it drove the gap in the broken bones too far apart for straight casting. I had to have surgery, pins put in to fix the fracture, and I was then on crutches for 8 weeks.
