Just as a point of order, Lincoln is not technically in Gadsden's coverage area. It's just off the edge, right on I-20 between Talladega and Anniston.

People in Lincoln subscribe to The (Talladega) Daily Home or The Anniston Star, or both. Gadsden does, however, cover most of the teams that play Lincoln ...

Do we KNOW that it wasn't broken out? Do we know this was the only mention of it in the whole paper? It might be, judging by the post above that says the paper doesn't cover Lincoln...but do we KNOW?

Nothing on the Web or A1.

Fair enough. I didn't know if someone had seen A1, and when I worked at a 12K our Web site was pretty hit or miss. But that's at least something.

You're close. One of Grizzard's former colleagues, Norman Arey, was covering a game in which a coach collapsed of a heart attack (and later died) as his running back scored the winning touchdown.

    Arey's lede was:
Chamblee's exciting, come-from-behind 21-14 victory over Druid Hills was somewhat marred by the death of its coach.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that this guy should never write again. Everyone makes mistakes, especially people at 19,000-circulation shops.

But my goodness. I used to work at a 2,500-circulation paper, and there's no way this gets in the paper.

We had a staff writer from another paper in our area write a lede (and I kid you not this was published. I have proof):

"The terrorist attacks on our country didn't stop Podunk North from celebrating its homecoming."

That was on Sept. 15, 2001.

Because otherwise, the terrorists would have won ...

I remember reading a couple of those ledes that week ...

Stanley's Cronkite obit might still be the worst story on a death.
