I'd rather write a simple straight-forward lede than to go with an overused and cheesy cliche. Sometimes it's best to stop trying to be cute and just get into the story.

I'm waiting for Hanukkah (Chanukah) cliches.

Torah Prep players thought they only had enough plays to light up the scoreboard for one quarter, but the Yalmulkas playbook was bright through all 48 minutes to defeat East Egypt, 21-17, and keep their stadium open.

That's a fireable offense at my shop. That's a carryover policy from the last SE. It's one I like.

Actual lead from Friday game. Names of schools have been changed to save the writer from deserved ridicule

On this Thanksgiving weekend, the East Bumblefuck High School football team were poor hosts, as they beat the stuffing out of their guests, the West Bumblefuck Spartans, 66-22.

The writer should be ridiculed for such poor grammar.

Call me crazy, but take out the hosts/guests part and the "beat the stuffing out of" tickles me.

The West Bumblefuck Spartans played like turkeys and were potatoed by East Bumblefuck High ....

    Well, it could be worse.

Anyone who thinks that's grounds for firing should be fired.

As someone noted earlier, the readers don't really care. Put out the paper for the readers, not for the tired grumps on the copy desk.
