"The Hitcher" was one of the most intense movie-watching experiences I've ever had. Hauer nailed that role.

Hauer nailed every part he was given. Dammit. This brings to mind an older Village Voice New Years top banner line from the eighties: "Lorne Greene is dead and Ronald Reagan is still alive. Why?"

Often overlooked performance was in "Surviving the Game" with Ice-T and F. Murray Abraham. That was a film that still sticks with me. I mean, hunting humans. Kind of a great premise for a movie because it's not so far-fetched.

Though mostly known for villains, proved he could play heroic in a movie I watch a lot as a kid--"Ladyhawke."

Hauer was so amazing and captivating in Nighthawks, Blade Runner and The Hitcher as a bad guy that you have to wonder how did his career fizzle out to z-level stuff after just a few years? He’s like an NHL star who went from 15 goals to 50 goals in consecutive years to 10 goals to playing in the ECHL for a decade.

Hauer wrote the "tears in rain" monologue from the end of Blade Runner the night it was shot. That's the sort of singular achievement that alone makes him a giant.

Let's not forget this later-years gem.

He sure did. One of the greatest bad guy portrayals ever.
