    Pocatello, Idaho
    Job Status: Full-time
    Salary: Not Specified

    Description:

The Idaho State Journal is searching for a high school sports reporter to join our coverage team.

The Journal is investing in its sports department and looking for an applicant who can cover high school sports from football and basketball to cross country and wrestling. Of particular importance, this applicant must possess the desire to embrace the Journal's new upcoming sports website that will feature statistics and standings and present the paper's prep sports content in an engaging, innovative manner.

This is an opportunity for a journalist to prove his or her ability in an environment that encourages creativity. Grow and develop writing recaps, features and blog posts and accumulate statistics while helping the existing three-person sports desk with layout and copy editing.

The Idaho State Journal is a 17,000-circulation, six-day paper in the mountains of Eastern Idaho. The Journal is located in Pocatello, a city with a population around 55,000 that's a 2-3 hour drive from Yellowstone National Park, the Grand Tetons, Boise and Salt Lake City.

    • Provide analysis and balanced commentary on the local prep sports scene where football is vitally important but so is track and field and soccer.

    • Work with the staff to produce a six-day, four-page sports section using InDesign.

    • Assist the staff with call ins and aggregating scores.

    • Participate in editorial meetings to identify and generate story ideas.

    • Organize and maintain journalistic data and files

    • Perform other duties as assigned.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • A bachelor's degree, preferably in journalism or a related field, but a candidate with a degree in another area will be considered with appropriate offsetting experience in sports writing.

    • Experience with InDesign a major plus.

    • An ability to maintain and improve our high school sports website is a must.

    • Ability to cover a game with a pen and a pad and also shoot photos.

    • An understanding of news writing, journalistic ethics and story structure.

Hours are 4 p.m. to midnight, five days a week, including weekends, but the schedule does vary.

Contact sports reporter Kyle Franko at kfranko@journalnet.com and submit a resume, cover letter, writing and layout examples.
