IndyStar, part of the Gannett Inc. and the USA TODAY NETWORK, is seeking a reporter to help cover a key beat in Indiana: high school girls sports. This reporter would team up with two other preps reporters to help meet the demand for great high school sports coverage across the state. We are looking for someone who can produce high-value storytelling, including enterprise stories that provide context and analysis, entertaining features and investigative pieces. The ability to break news is critical, and this reporter must be able to develop strong sourcing. This reporter will develop content that takes advantage of all delivery forms available to us, including social media, mobile, podcast, desktop, video, television and print. IndyStar is looking to fill this position quickly.

    Responsibilities:
    • Primary responsibilities will focus on volleyball/soccer (fall), girls basketball (winter), softball (spring) and recruiting (summer).
    • We’d want to brand you as the state’s go-to-source for high school girls sports, a key growing audience for us. IndyStar’s preps coverage strategy to sports-specific beats has proven to be a key source of subscription growth. We want to build on that.
    • Would also assist in coverage of big events (Indy 500, NBA All-Star Game, NCAA events)
    • Be a curious, assertive and self-starting journalist who jumps to report on breaking news and trending topics with urgency.
    • Harness social media and messaging platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok and/or Reddit, as a newsgathering tool.
    • Optimize stories for target audience groups using SEO and metrics information.

    Requirements:
    • Bachelor’s degree.
    • At least two years of reporting or digital producing at a news outlet.
    • Proven ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
    • Ability to take photos and record video/audio in the field.
    • Solid news judgment and adherence to journalism ethics.
    • Dedication to fairness and accuracy, as well as a commitment to report with compassion and sensitivity.

Disappointing to hear. He did a great job. Why would people want to leave this industry when there are so many cool things to write about?

Aside from the whole "working for Gannett" thing, most definitely.

Want to provide an update: We have interviewed our four finalists. We appreciate all the interest in the job. I tried to respond via email to all who applied, but if I didn't get to you, my apologies.

It's a bit insulting for anyone on the list of applicants you didn't respond to whenever this message ultimately surfaces on social media or this forum. Not the first time I've seen it. Like theirs were the worst or least important applications.

    They probably were. Be better.

Can't argue with this. If you're going to say you emailed some applicants, then actually you could have emailed all of them. This feels like an sj.com argument from very, very long ago -- when there were enough jobs to go around -- but I'll always say that proper courtesy is to contact every last one. Lord knows my applications were the worst or least important once (and maybe still are, ha), but I remember a time when everyone got a response.
