High school gamers

    For what it's worth ...

    I always enjoyed reading Sam Mellinger's high school stuff in the KC Star. He pretty much moved over baseball after Passan left for Yahoo, though he still writes prep columns that are very good. His prep features were excellent.

    The KC Star and WaPo both have very good high school reporter feeder systems, which allow them to groom writers in their image while granting the writer to grow and improve with their own style. KC's J. Brady McCullough also stood out. The system leads to some very good prep stuff.
