Not to mention it makes it a little tough to meet deadline.

And then you get the call a day or two later, or the email:

"You didn't have one thing in your paper about Podunk's win Friday night. You had ever other team and a few teams that aren't even around here, but nothing on Podunk. This paper is biased and these kids deserve coverage because they're working hard."

I enjoy calling these hotheads back and telling asking them if the paper miracles itself into their driveways or the racks at the gas-n-sip.

"What?" they say after a cautious pause.

"I'll ask again, do you think your paper, by some miracle or other divine intervention, suddenly appears out of thin air into your driveway or the rack at the convenience story down the street."

"Uhh...don't really know what you mean."

"Okay. I'll explain it to you. The paper is printed at midnight. It goes into somebody's car about about 2:30 in the morning and they drive around aimlessly in the night, while you sleep, and put papers into people's yards and driveways and the racks down the street. When Podunk doesn't even start playing until midnight because of lightning or whatever freak of nature is ocurring in Podunk that night, there's no possible way we can hold up the printing of the paper just so we can get a score in there that Podunk whipped the shit outta Another Podunk, 54-0.

"And another thing. Had you actually read the newspaper, you'd have noticed the big box above the masthead that states "Podunk vs. Another Podunk was delayed due to lightning, and it did not end before press time. To read coverage of the big game at Podunk, please log onto our Web site at www.podunkdailygnus...com and click on sports."

They usually just hang up on your ass after that, or you get:

"Still...this paper's biased. Y'all cover all the other teams more."
