iPod, my man, iPod. I do the same thing to drown out the fans screaming at the refs in basketball ...

There are no errors in high school baseball.

Grounder to third base, third baseman throws the ball over the head of the first baseman, score it a hit.

Can't kill the spirit of the kids. ::)

I had a mother (whom I went to high school with) complain to me that I didn't put her son's "home run" in the paper when I covered their game. What it was, was a grounder to short that he airmailed to first, sending the batter/runner to second and then on toward third. The first baseman then overthrew home plate trying to get the lead runner and the batter/runner scored.

It was a home run! Yay!

Greatest. Invention. Ever. I need to send Steve Jobs a thank you card for preventing me from committing a multiple homicide at a softball game.

Screw that. You get to high school and it's big boy town. I'm lenient on scoring errors when I have the misfortune of covering a youth league game. Might even waver if it's a tough play (rushed throw, slow roller that's bobbled but might have had a 50-50 chance on anyway, etc.), but if you're starting for a varsity high school team you should make certain plays.

I kept score at a game once, I counted seven errors for one team. So, I get back to the office, the coach calls in his box and tells me no errors. I debated him for about 15 minutes on several of the plays, he finally conceded four errors. The other three were tough calls.

Suburban Dallas team beats city team 53-0. Scored at least 23 runs (might have been 27) in the final inning. Coach doesn't know what could be done. UH, HOW ABOUT TELL YOUR KIDS TO GROUND OUT, DICK.

This is getting to be a huge problem with the travel/club circuit. Two teams in the same conference or area who have always played each other, one is stocked with kids spending $10K a year on all-star tournaments and year-round private coaching and the other can barely get kids out to practice during the school season. They aren't even playing the same sport.

I miss the days of slowpitch softball. You could cover a game in 45 minutes and be done. A fastpitch game is barely faster than a regular baseball game, especially this year after moving the circle back.

It's exactly the opposite here. If a fast-pitch team has a dominant pitcher, the game takes about 1:15. Slow-pitch teams are loaded with big, strong basketball player types, and you get a lot of 18-17 games.

Wish IPods existed when I last covered softball. Still CDs then.

Still defrosting after a baseball game that may have set the seven inning record for most full counts.
I have reversed my original opinion and now agree 100 percent with the original poster.

No HS baseball here - too far north. Softball starting to emerge in some schools in my region as a self-funded (that is, we'll let you represent us, but you're paying the bills) sport.

The volleyball coach at one of my schools (an extremely nice guy) once said about softball: "In volleyball, they do cheers when we do something. In softball, they cheer for breathing."

One thing that hasn't been factored into the discussion on errors are field conditions. I doubt a lot of these high school diamonds are maintained so well, which in some places can make every ground ball an adventure.
